Elk Grove man arrested in hit-and-run that seriously injured 74-year-old woman
Suspect released on bail
ELK GROVE, Calif. — A 59-year-old Elk Grove man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a July hit-and-run collision that left a 74-year-old woman seriously injured, according to the Elk Grove Police Department.
Police identified the suspect as Gary Lyons, who was arrested at his home and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.
The collision happened around 9 a.m. on July 30 on West Camden Drive near Camden Lake Way.
According to police, the 74-year-old woman was walking in the area when she was struck by a passing vehicle. The driver left the scene without stopping.
People nearby came to the woman's aid and remained with her until police officers and fire personnel arrived, authorities said.
The woman was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Police said Wednesday that she remains hospitalized.
Elk Grove police traffic detectives began investigating the collision and sought to identify both the vehicle and its driver.
Investigators said they used home surveillance video and the city's automated license plate reader system as part of the investigation. Detectives eventually identified the suspected vehicle as a GMC Yukon and Lyons as the suspected driver.
Traffic investigators arrested Lyons Wednesday morning at his home, which police said is in the same neighborhood and not far from where the collision occurred.
During the arrest, detectives also located a GMC Yukon inside the garage at the residence. Police said the vehicle had front-end damage that investigators believe is consistent with evidence gathered during the hit-and-run investigation.
Lyons was taken to the Sacramento County Main Jail and booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. After being booked, Lyons was released on bail.
The arrest comes nearly three weeks after the collision. Police did not provide additional information Wednesday about the woman's condition beyond saying that her injuries remain serious.
