Rep. Matsui on Shutdown - 'We're Here to Do Our Work'

As the federal shutdown quickly approaches the three-week mark, Democrats and Republicans are digging in their heels. As part of the partisan battle, Democratic members of Congress are, for now, standing in solidarity.

After a news conference held yesterday at the U.S. Capitol by Minority Leader Hakeem Jefferies, Elk Grove's representative in Congress, Doris Matsui, posted a video on social media expressing her unity with Democratic leadership.

Matsui, who has used social media for some time, has amplified her presence and advocacy in recent months. Not coincidentally, Matsui is facing her first legitimate challenge, ironically from within her own party, since she began representing the Sacramento area in 2005.

Progressive Democratic Sacramento City Council Member Mai Vang entered the race for California's 7th Congressional District in September and has cultivated a dedicated group of supporters. While Vang has energized followers and made the once-safe seat for Matsui competitive, Matsui will have the support of establishment Democrats.

Nonetheless, Ms. Matsui is undoubtedly aware of what happened to Democrat Joe Crowley and Republican Eric Cantor, who did not take upstart challengers seriously. As Vang continues her push, Matsui will have to remain visible, and who knows, for once, hold a town hall meeting.

See Matsui's commentary in the video.
