There is an old saying: Money talks. Bullshit walks.

Rep. Doris Matsui’s hard-fought campaign against fellow Democrat Mai Vang is putting that saying to the test. Her personal wealth is not just talking — it is shouting. Whether it gets the last word remains for voters to decide.

According to information posted by the Federal Election Commission, Matsui put another $1.5 million of her personal funds into her campaign on Friday, Oct. 23.

Not surprisingly, Vang’s campaign, which is being outspent in what has become a bitter intraparty battle, seized on the latest loan and put its own spin on it. Its press release was titled “Matsui Loans Campaign $6.9 Million to Buy Back Her Seat in Congress.”

“Doris Matsui can lend her own campaign nearly $7 million while families in this district are choosing between rent and groceries,” Vang said in the press release. “I don’t have that luxury. Doris has no idea the choices families have to make in this economy and is deeply out of touch with those of us living paycheck to paycheck.”

One thing is certain: The additional money gives Matsui more firepower to flood Sacramento’s airwaves and social media feeds in the final days before the Nov. 3 election. Voters will decide who wins, but Matsui can certainly afford to keep the volume turned up and viewers may be pushing the mute button more often.
