If Rep. Kevin Kiley's campaign were a stock option, its value is moving to zero as the clock winds down
The wager mimics a stock option with an expiration date; without significant changes in the elections dynamics, its value diminishes each hour as Nov. 3 approaches
One week from tomorrow, Nov. 3, is the final day to vote in California’s 2026 general election. In the absence of polling data, regular readers of Elk Grove News know we've tracked prediction markets and national election ratings since before the June primary as additional gauges of competitive races.

Among them is the contest between Democrat Dr. Richard Pan and Republican-turned-independent Rep. Kevin Kiley for California’s 6th Congressional District. The Cook Political Report and the University of Virginia’s Sabato’s Crystal Ball both favor Democrats.
On the Kalshi prediction market, the prices we have tracked since the primary have consistently implied a greater than 90% chance of Pan winning and less than 10% for Kiley.
Those figures represent market expectations about who will win, not the percentage of votes either candidate will receive.
As an experiment, an Elk Grove News reader placed a $1 bet on Kiley to win on Oct. 16, with a potential total payout exceeding $11 if he wins.
But the reader does not have to wait for the election’s outcome to collect—or cut a loss. Like a stock option, a Kalshi contract can be sold while trading remains open.
For example, if contracts purchased at 7 cents each rose to 14 cents, the position’s value would roughly double before fees. The reader could sell for a profit even if Kiley never wins the election.
So what happened to the reader’s bet?
As of the evening of Oct. 26, the original $1 position could be sold for about 50 cents—roughly half its purchase price.
That decline reflects a lower resale price for the Kiley contracts. It does not establish that his actual electoral chances have been cut in half.
Prices could still move sharply as traders react to campaign developments, ballot-return information and, eventually, election results.
For now, the reader's dollar tells a modest story. With each passing day, the Kalshi prediction market shows diminishing chances of a Kiley victory.
The election will determine whether that long shot pays off.
