For the first time in her elected political career, Matsui is facing a legitimate challenger. Progressive Democrat and Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang, who finished in first place ahead of Matsui in the five-candidate June primary, is testing the popularity and vitality of the 82-year-old 10-term congresswoman.
Since launching what is essentially the first competitive race of her career, Matsui has avoided meeting voters directly. Instead, she is making appearances at controlled events, a point that Vang has emphasized.
The question for Vang is whether her campaign can withstand these withering attacks from Matsui's political surrogates. For Matsui, are these tacit endorsements from Elk Grove political elites like Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen and Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen enough to suppress votes for Vang?
Elk Grove News has invited Ms. Matsui to a podcast interview, and one of her campaign consultants promised a response by the first week of October.
