Matsui Has an Almost 4-1 Advantage Over Vang in Cash Chase

Even though Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang has conducted a highly visible congressional campaign to date, there is one thing she has acknowledged that she will be at a disadvantage as she challenges Rep. Doris Matsui for California's 7th Congressional District. As the long-term Democratic incumbent, Matsui has a distinct fundraising advantage.

Recent Federal Election Commission disclosures verified this aspect of the race. Matsui has an almost four-to-one cash advantage over her fellow Democrat, Vang.

As of December 31, Matsui has $785,325 on hand, of which $227,501 was raised last year. Vang, who formally entered the race in September, has $198,664 on hand after raising $282,620 in a relatively short time frame.

Although Matsui and Vang have generated the most interest for the June 2026 primary, three more Democratic and one Republican candidate have reported. Erica Lee left the race after Vang's entrance.

As is typical of a viable challenger to an entrenched incumbent, Vang has emphasized that small individual donors fund her campaign. Likewise, Vang has used Matsui's predominant lobbyists and corporate donations as a cudgel.
