Mai Vang makes a pitch for contributions in the battle against incumbent Doris Matsui

As part of her commitment not to accept corporate contributions, Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang took to social media yesterday to seek campaign contributions.

Recorded in what appears to be a kitchen, Ms. Vang posted the video seen below on her campaign Facebook and Instagram. Using a combination of sincerity and self-deprecating humor, Vang is appealing for donations of any size.

Undoubtedly, incumbent Congresswoman Doris Matsui, who has been in office since 2005 and is well-connected to the Washington, D.C. contributor class, will have access to large sums of money.

How Matsui uses that cash and if she can match Vang's energy and seemingly dedicated followers, will be one of the factors in this race. Notwithstanding the entrance of a viable Republican, the battle between the upstart Vang and the establishment Matsui will be hard-fought heading into the June primary and, possibly, the November 2026 general election.
