During Mayor's State of the City address, Elk Grove Vice Mayor Robles makes unprecedented comments on ICE raids
Vice Mayor Sergio Robles unexpectedly made remarks on a controversial topic at the Elk Grove State of City address at District56.

Typically, whether it's the State of the Union, a state, or a city address, these events are unremarkable, where the person speaking brags and tries to paint a picture full of rainbows and puppies. Today's State of the City address by Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen was no exception.

However, after the mayor made her address at the District56 facility this morning, followed by a brief recess and two public comments, Vice Mayor Sergio Robles took the stage. Breaking Elk Grove precedent, Mr. Robles made impassioned comments about one of the most controversial national topics of the day, the Los Angeles ICE deportation raids.

Although he did not mention those raids specifically, there were several key points the first-term councilman made indicative of those events that have captured worldwide attention over the last several days.

"I would be remiss if I didn't end on this note," he said. "What we're going through as a community right now, it's something that is affecting each and every one of us."Among the Vice Mayor's key points were the following:

  • This matter affects everyone, whether you are a Democrat or a Republican
  • As an eighth grader, Robles witnessed a friend's parents being subjected to immigration raids
  • The immigration sweeps are "super personal."
  • Keep in mind what is happening
  • These are challenging and tough times

The entire commentary can be viewed in the video. It is not known if Mayor Singh-Allen was aware that Robles would make the commentary, but since the address was convened as an official Elk Grove City Council meeting, Robles was within his rights to speak, although it may displease Singh-Allen as his remarks may overshadow the State of the City address.

Curiously, although Robles said his comments were not meant to be political, in the context of the Los Angeles protest, the ICE raids,  and the State of California's lawsuit against President Trump, the issue is partisan and political.

As reported earlier, Robles also made comments on his personal social media page regarding Los Angeles. Robles is also an active member of the California National Guard.
