Congressman Doug LaMalfa Fights for His Political life, Contributes to No on 50

Rep. LaMalfa may have to run in a district that supported Kamala Harris in 2024.

Congressman Doug LaMalfa Fights for His Political life, Contributes to No on 50

While both sides of Proposition 50 have raised millions of dollars and are spending the money in a variety of ways, one Northern California Republican Congressmember has given a significant portion of their campaign funds to the No side.

According to data collected by the California Secretary of State, Congressman Doug LaMalfa, who currently represents California's 1st Congressional District, has made eight contributions totaling $109,790 since September 3 to the No on Prop 5 - Stop Sacramento's Power Grab, which has raised $8.9 million.

While LaMalfa's contribution to the Stop Sacramento's Power Grab is a minuscule amount of the total raised, it is a significant portion of LaMalfa's campaign cash on hand. According to filings with the Federal Election Commission, as of September 30, LaMalfa had $842,322 on hand.

LaMalfa is one of the five Republican Congressmembers targeted explicitly by the proposed redistricting sought by Proposition 50. If California Voters adopt the Proposition in the November special election, LaMalfa would run in a District, presumably the new 1st District, that voted for Kamala Harris with 55 percent of the vote to Trump's 42 percent.

A large portion of LaMalfa's current district in Northern California border counties - the heavily conservative so-called State of Jefferson - has been paired with heavily Democratic Marin County and coastal areas in the proposed 2nd Congressional District.

The most recent poll from research firm Co-efficent shows 54 percent support, 36 percent opposed, and 10 percent undecided.

With his and other California Republican Congress members' futures in the balance, LaMalfa may well be served to contribute more of his substantial campaign cash to the No on 50 to save his safe seat in Congress and continue to represent the State of Jefferson.
