Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen (left) and State Senator Angelique Ashby easily beat Republican opponents.

With token resistance from Republican candidates, State Senator Angelique Ashby and Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen easily won reelection in the Senate District 8 and Assembly District 10, respectively.

In both races, about 27% of the ballots have been tabulated. Both districts are wholly within Sacramento County and include Elk Grove.

Nguyen leads her Republican opponent, Vinaya Singh, by nearly three-to-one, with 54,867 votes (72.3%) to 20,997 votes (27.7%).

Ashby also leads her opponent, Susan Mason, by nearly three-to-one, wth 98,662 votes (72.3%) to 37,856 (27.7%).

Depending on the results of the heated race for California's 7th Congressional District between Doris Matsui and Mai Vang, Ashby and Nguyen are rumored to be viable congressional candidates if Matsui wins reelection and makes this her last term.

Ashby will be halfway through her second four-year term, so a primary candidacy is fairly riskless. Nguyen, however, would have to forgo an easy reelection to a fourth Assembly term, and if she did not advance out of the primary, she would have effectively killed her electoral career.

Nguyen could face the same fate that befell Democratic Assemblymember Dr. Jasmeet Bains in the June 22nd Congressional District primary. Although Bains had the support of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, she came in third place, effectively ending her electoral career.
