Michael Vargas wins second term as Area 2 EGUSD Trustee
Kirk Thomson's campaign suffered a serious setback several weeks ago
With 28% of the votes counted, Michael Vargas has won a second term on the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Trustees representing Area 2. Democrat Vargas was challenged by Republican Kirk Thomson.
Vargas currently has 5,248 votes (68.9%) of the vote, compared to Thomson, who has 2,368 votes (31.1%).
Although Democratic registration in Area 2 gave Vargas an easier path to reelection, Thomson campaigned on a parental-rights agenda that became popular with conservative voters after pandemic school shutdowns that could have made the race competitive.
However, Thomson's campaign imploded when derogatory social media posts he made were revealed. Although Thomson did not drop out, his campaign was effectively squashed.
