78-Year-Old Elk Grove Resident killed in head-on hit and run incident

ELK GROVE, Calif. — A 78-year-old Elk Grove resident was killed Thursday night after a driver who police say had fled an earlier hit-and-run crash crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with the victim's vehicle.

The fatal collision occurred about 9:15 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Elk Grove Boulevard and Stonelake Drive, according to the Elk Grove Police Department.

Officers arrived to find a silver Honda Accord overturned on its side in the center median and a white Honda Accord with extensive damage to the driver's side, windshield and roof. The driver of the white Honda, a 78-year-old Elk Grove resident who was the vehicle's sole occupant, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sacramento County Coroner's Office will release the victim's identity after notifying next of kin.

A preliminary investigation found the white Honda was traveling eastbound on Elk Grove Boulevard approaching Stonelake Drive when a silver Honda traveling westbound crossed into the eastbound lanes. Police said the silver Honda struck the center median, became airborne and collided head-on with the victim's vehicle.

The driver of the silver Honda, a 51-year-old Sacramento woman, sustained multiple serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where she remains under treatment.

Investigators said the woman had been fleeing the scene of a minor hit-and-run collision that occurred minutes earlier on Elk Grove Boulevard near Franklin Boulevard before the fatal crash.

Traffic detectives believe alcohol may have been a factor in the collision. No arrest has been made because the woman remains hospitalized. Police said any criminal charges will be determined as the investigation continues and as her medical condition improves.

The investigation remains active. Anyone with information about the collision is encouraged to contact the Elk Grove Police Department's Traffic Bureau.
