Will Elk Grove Councilman Robles Continue Immigrant Advocacy? Will His Democratic Colleagues Continue to be Dismissive?

Will the Mayor or City Council address recent events in Minnesota and their broader implications?

Will Elk Grove Councilman Robles Continue Immigrant Advocacy? Will His Democratic Colleagues Continue to be Dismissive?
Elk Grove City Councilman was unsuccessful is earning his colleagues support to issue a resolution of support for the city's at-risk immigrant community.

Elk Grove District 4 City Councilman Sergio Robles made an impassioned appeal at the end of Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen's June 10, 2025, state of the city address. Mr. Robles made these comments as President Donald Trump's personal army of Border Patrol and ICE agents began terrorizing immigrant communities.

These remarks, which were unplanned and delivered during the state of the city address, an official government meeting, were the first of Robles's attempts to raise awareness of vulnerable immigrants, but they were not his last.

The first-term councilman also noted during the state of the city address that he was raised in Minnesota and remembered when his classmates lived in fear that their parents could be deported. Robles, one of four Democratic elected officials on the five-member Elk Grove City Council, has been the only person to address the situation, which has only escalated since he made these remarks.

About a month later, Robles also made additional remarks on his personal social media platform. Robles noted that Elk Grove Police will not cooperate (by statute) with ICE or Border Patrol on immigration raids.

In September, Mayor Singh-Allen and the city council heard appeals from three individuals.

At the next city council meeting, Robles sought his colleagues' support for a resolution or proclamation prompted in part by the September 10 public comments. Robles' three Democratic and one Republican colleagues said the city has sufficiently signaled support for immigrants.

Tonight, the Elk Grove City Council will hold its first meeting of 2026, and it comes less than a week after the shooting death of Renee Good in Minneapolis at the hands of an ICE agent. While we don't expect the suggestion of a resolution in support of Elk Grove's immigrant community to resurface, it will be noteworthy if the Mayor or City Council addresses those events and the broader implications.
