Vang's mailer, which appears to target Democratic and no-party-preference voters, comes as Matsui has launched a full-throated TV commercial blitz. One of the Matsui attack TV commercials condemns Vang's attendance record on the various regional boards she serves as a Sacramento City Council member.
This mailer attempts to counterpunch Matsui's TV commercial by literally painting Matsui negatively. The mailer features an altered black-and-white image of Matsui under the headline "Doris Matsui THE FACE OF DC CORRUPTION."
The mailer seeks to tap Democratic voters' anger at establishment figures like Matsui for what is considered weak-kneed resistance to Trump, and for being part of a mechanism that has enabled his policies.
With superior financing, Matsui is swamping TV with commercial ads to bolster her credentials as an opponent of Trump while questioning Vang's commitment to public service. Vang's mailer tries to reinforce the idea that Matsui is part of the establishment and out of tune with the needs of everyday people.
To that point, Vang accuses Matsui of supporting regulations that have aided her billionaire husband.
