Rural Elk Grove resident calls proposed changes for Summer Villas project 'Unreasonable, irresponsible, and reckless'
An Elk Grove resident speaks against proposed changes to the city's General Plan  that would allow for rural area high-density housing.

At last night's Elk Grove City Council meeting, the mayor and city council heard from residents about a proposed project they say will devastate the city's rural area.

The proposed Summer Villas project on the southeast corner of Sheldon and Waterman road will require a significant amendment to Elk Grove's General Plan. The General Plan currently does not allow for high-density housing projects. If the General Plan is amended and the Summer Villas project is approved by the Elk Grove City Council, about 499 single-family dwellings would be built on 72 acres.

Since the city's founding in 2000, elected officials have promised to leave the rural area as is, which is comprised chiefly of multiple-acre parcels with single-family dwellings.

Speakers from rural areas have been speaking during public comments on non-agenda items at city council meetings. There were three people at last night's meeting who spoke against the Summer Villas project.

One speaker, Calos Zamarripa, called the proposed changes to the General Plan "Unreasonable, irresponsible, and reckless." See Mr. Zamarripa's entire commentary in the video.

No hearing dates have been scheduled for the Summer Villas project. Until such time, rural area residents are likely to appear at city council meetings to advocate for protections in their area.
