Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is gearing up for what is projected to be its busiest holiday travel season yet, with passenger volumes expected to surpass last year's totals. Hundreds of thousands of travelers are anticipated to pass through SMF between Thanksgiving and the New Year.

The airport forecasts a significant peak during the travel periods. Sunday, November 30th, is expected to be the busiest day during the Thanksgiving rush. Looking ahead to the winter holidays, SMF is preparing for an even larger influx of passengers, noting that 30 percent more seats are available this year compared to the same week in 2024.

“We know how important these trips are for our passengers,” said Sheri Thompson-Duarte, Deputy Director of Airport Operations and Public Safety for the Sacramento County Department of Airports. “We’re ready for a safe, efficient and festive holiday season, and we encourage travelers to plan ahead so they can start their journeys stress-free.”

🍽️ New Concessions and Traveler Tips

To enhance the passenger experience during the busy season, travelers will find several new dining options across the terminals. Sidewalk Juice and West Coast Sourdough are now open in both terminals, offering travelers fresh sandwiches, soups, and smoothies. Terminal A has also welcomed Golden Grove Market and a new Starbucks location.

Airport officials strongly urge all passengers to follow these tips for a smooth trip:

  • Arrive Early: Plan to be at the airport at least 2.5 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours for international flights to ensure enough time for parking, check-in, and security screening.
  • Check Parking: The parking garage and daily lot often fill up fast during peak morning hours. Travelers should be prepared to use an Economy lot and take a shuttle to the terminal. Real-time parking availability can be monitored on the SMF website.
  • Use the Free Waiting Lot: Those picking up arriving passengers can reduce curb congestion by utilizing the free cell phone waiting area until their party is ready at the curb.
  • Pack Smart: Review TSA guidelines carefully for carry-on items, especially when packing liquid, gel, or food-related gifts.

By planning ahead, SMF aims to make the holiday experience safe and efficient for everyone passing through its gates.
