Sacramento’s Mai Vang Challenges Rep. Doris Matsui to Televised Debates in CA-7 Primary

Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang on Monday challenged longtime U.S. Rep. Doris Matsui to participate in at least two televised or live-streamed debates ahead of the primary election for California’s 7th Congressional District.

In a statement released by her campaign, Vang said voters should hear directly from the candidates before ballots are mailed and early voting begins. She called for Matsui to commit by the end of March to two debates that would occur before the early voting period.

“As more and more dark money floods our elections and distorts our political process, it is more important than ever that voters hear directly from the candidates who wish to represent them in a thoughtful exchange of ideas,” Vang said. “Before voters in California’s 7th Congressional District begin to receive their ballots, they deserve to hear directly from myself and Rep. Matsui and how our visions for the direction of this country differ.”

Vang said she has already agreed to participate in two debates and urged Matsui to do the same.

Since launching her campaign, Vang said she has held dozens of public events to meet with voters. Her campaign contrasted that with Matsui, who it said has held only one in-person town hall with pre-screened questions since her most recent reelection.

Challenges to debate are a common tactic by political challengers, particularly when incumbents appear vulnerable or are trailing in polls. In this case, however, the invitation may present a strategic “no-lose” scenario for Vang.

If Matsui declines the debates, Vang could use the refusal to argue that the veteran lawmaker is unwilling to answer unscripted questions in a public forum. If Matsui accepts, the debates would place the challenger on the same stage as the incumbent, potentially elevating Vang’s profile and giving her the appearance of parity with the longtime congresswoman.

Matsui, who has represented the Sacramento-area district since 2005, has not publicly responded to the debate challenge.
