Sacramento District Attorney Thien Ho Enters Race For 6th Congressional District
In yet another consequence of Proposition 50's redistricting, Sacramento District Attorney Thien Ho announced today that he is entering the race for California's 6th Congressional District. Ho, a career prosecutor with the Sacramento District Attorney's office, successfully prosecuted the notorious Golden State Killer and was elected District Attorney in 2022.
Ho will run against fellow Democrat and former California State Senator and Assemblymember Dr. Richard Pan, M.D. After being termed out of the State Senate in 2022, Pan unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Sacramento in 2024.
See Ho's video announcement below.
Unlike his two predecessors as District Attorney, Ann Marie Schubert and Jan Scully, Ho has cultivated a high profile. That profile has included national exposure from the lawsuit he filed against the City of Sacramento over its handling of the homeless population.
Ho was also the driving force behind California's voter-approved Proposition 36 in 2024. That controversial proposition, which has not been funded and was opposed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, sought to address homelessness and the increase in shoplifting.
The 6th Congressional District, with its current boundaries, is represented by Democrat Dr. Ami Bera, M.D. With the reconfigured congressional districts, Bera has decided to run for the 3rd Congressional District, currently represented by Republican Representative Kevin Kiley.
The 3rd District now has a Democratic voter advantage. Kiley, who said he will seek reelection but has not decided which District he will run for.
While Ho was elected to a four-year term in 2022, the terms for the Sacramento County District Attorney and Sheriff were legislatively granted a one-time, two-year extension so that the terms would coincide with presidential elections.
Ho will enter the election wth a healthy cash balance in his campaign fund. According to his most recent California Form 460 file with Sacramento County on July 31, Ho has $383,379 (see disclosure report below).
