Sacramento County will open a temporary cold-weather respite shelter Thursday afternoon in response to prolonged cold, damp conditions expected across the region, officials announced.

The shelter will operate at the Warren E. Thornton Youth Center, 4000 Branch Center Road, beginning at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, through 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15. An extension is possible if weather conditions persist.

The site will serve adults 18 and older and is operated in partnership with First Step Communities. Services include meals, cots, showers, restrooms, phone and electronic charging, and light case management.

Pets will be allowed — one per person or two per couple — provided they remain crated indoors and leashed outside. Crates, leashes, and pet food will be available on site.

Regional Transit will offer free rides to the shelter. Anyone planning to use the respite center is advised to call 2-1-1 in advance to check capacity.

As of Tuesday, the city of Elk Grove has not made any similar public announcement regarding the activation of a weather-based shelter.
