Arrested 4 days after release, Sacramento parolee sentenced for firearms possession

A Sacramento man who had been paroled for just four days before he was arrested was sentenced yesterday in U.S. District Court in Sacramento on weapons charges.

Quentin Carthen, 41, of Sacramento, will serve seven years and eight months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

On March 16, 2020, Carthen was riding in a car that was stopped by law enforcement officers. Carthen, who had been paroled from state prison four days earlier, exited the vehicle, ignored commands to stop, and ran away from the detectives.

As he ran away, Carthen dropped a tan-colored bag that he had been carrying which contained a loaded assault weapon, an extended magazine, a silencer, and the safety switch set to “fire.” This gun also had a rubber glove-like piece placed over the trigger, which would allow its user to pull the trigger without leaving fingerprints.

Carthen had been convicted of several felonies, including drug trafficking and assault. This case was the product of an investigation by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
