Outside Matsui’s Sacramento Office, Democratic Activists Accuse Incumbent of Elevating Republican in CA-07 Race
The Republican candidate, Zachariah Wooden, has not actively campaigned or raised funds
A group of activists gathered in front of the Robert Matsui federal building in downtown Sacramento this morning to condemn Democratic Rep. Doris Matsui for boosting a Republican candidate in the heated primary race for California's 7th Congressional District.
Among the allegations from a coalition of Democratic clubs, labor unions, and community organizations gathered outside Matsui's district office, evidence that her own campaign directed a super PAC to spend roughly $100,000 boosting a pro-Trump Republican in CA-07.
Among the speakers (in order as seen in the video below) were Moiz Mir of Sunrise Movement Sacramento, Amaris Leon, a member of the California Working Families Party, and Shirley Toy, a member of the California Nurses Association and an elected member of the Sacramento Democratic County Central Committee.
The groups involved include California Working Families Party, UNITE HERE, UAW Region 6, CA Nurses Association, FemDems, Latinx Dems, Sunrise Movement, and Sacramento DSA.
The Republican candidate, Zachariah Wooden, has not actively campaigned or raised funds. For Matsui, who has never faced a viable challenger since winning the seat in a 2005 special election following the death of her husband, Rep. Robert Matsui, facing Wooden would virtually assure an easy reelection in the November general election.
Instead, Matsui is being challenged by fellow Democrat and Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang. A centerpiece of Vang's campaign has been Matsui, who is 81, and is being portrayed as out of touch with the needs of constituents, particularly younger voters.
Mr. Mir also answered two questions about voter participation and get-out-the-vote efforts for Vang. Voting in the California primary ends on June 2.
