Man Dies After Struggle With Elk Grove Police at Chevron Station
Callers told dispatchers the man appeared to be under the influence of narcotics.
A 37-year-old man died Sunday, a day after he was arrested during a confrontation with Elk Grove Police at a Chevron station on Promenade Parkway, the department said in a news release.
Officers were called to the gas station at 12:16 p.m. Saturday after employees reported a man trying to enter the store’s back office and moving behind the cash register area. Callers told dispatchers the man appeared to be under the influence of narcotics.
When officers arrived, they tried to detain the suspect, who immediately resisted, police said. Additional officers joined the four-to-five-minute struggle before handcuffing the man. According to the department, no force was used beyond efforts to control the man’s arms.
Despite being handcuffed, the man “continued to struggle,” the statement said. Officers placed him in a WRAP restraint, a fabric harness designed to immobilize combative subjects, and positioned him face-up and semi-upright in the back seat of a patrol vehicle while they monitored him. Police say they found suspected cocaine in his possession.
A short time later the man suffered a medical emergency in the patrol car, according to police. Officers removed him from the vehicle and began CPR until Cosumnes Fire Department paramedics arrived and restored a pulse. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died at 1:27 a.m. Sunday, June 29.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the man’s name after notifying next of kin. Two officers sustained minor injuries during the struggle, the department said.
The incident is being investigated by the Elk Grove Police Department’s Investigation Bureau. Per department policy, the Professional Standards Bureau will conduct an internal review, and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office will perform an independent investigation.
