Kalshi Prediction Market Favors Mai Vang Over Rep. Doris Matsui in California's 7th Congressional Race

This Friday, the California Secretary of State will certify the June 2026 primary results. As it stands today, California's 7th Congressional District, Mai Vang is in first place with 65,617 votes for 31.2%, and Rep. Doris Matsui is in second with 61,114 votes for 29.1%.

The surprise in this five-candidate race was not that no Republican advanced, or that the two finalists are Democrats. The surprise was that Ms. Matsui, a ten-term incumbent, came in second place behind Ms. Vang, a progressive Social Democrat.

Notwithstanding the lurch further left by Democratic voters in many districts nationally, where does the race between Matsui and Vang stand today? With no polling available from either campaign or independent organizations, we will turn to the Kalshi predictions market.

As of this morning, the betting pool, currently valued at $13,438, is eye-opening. Vang is currently favored over Matsui by 63 to 38%.

The general election is less than four months away, and many campaigns are going into a bit of hibernation for the next six to seven weeks. Barring some unforeseen controversy or event, we don't expect a big movement in these numbers between now and Labor Day.

As we approach and pass Labor Day, these numbers could change, and we expect them to narrow. Matsui has a financial advantage over Vang, and her cadre of supporters will serve as her sledgehammer while she takes a softer approach toward her opponent.

Vang, who is half Matsui's age, is a tireless campaigner, as evidenced by her stronger-than-expected primary finish. The question for Vang will be how well she weathers and personally responds to the coming slew of attack ads on TV, radio, social media, and mailers.

One other thing Vang has going for her at this precise moment is that she is benefiting from the anti-incumbent zeitgeist with Democratic voters. As has been often said, four months in politics can be an eternity, and that zeitgeist could change.
