Elk Grove Unified Race Heats Up as Kirk Thomson Challenges Incumbent, Could Shift Board Balance
Thompson is challenging first-term Trustee Michael Vargas
Elk Grove parent and frequent public commenter Kirk Thomson has announced his candidacy for the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Trustees, setting up a contest that could move the ideological balance of the nonpartisan body.
Thomson, a father of two students in the district, said he is running for the Trustee Area 2 seat with a campaign focused on academic performance, fiscal oversight, and school safety. “We should be focused on strong academic outcomes, responsible budgeting, and making sure every campus is safe and supportive,” Thomson said in a statement announcing his campaign.
A regular presence at school board meetings — and previously at Elk Grove City Council sessions — Thomson has often spoken in support of expanded parental involvement and what he describes as “parents’ rights” in education policy debates. His candidacy reflects a broader trend of community activists seeking elected school board positions after engaging in public comment and advocacy.
Although school board races in California are officially nonpartisan, Thomson is viewed as a conservative-leaning candidate. If elected, he would join Trustee Heidi Moore, elected in 2024 and appearing to hold similar views, potentially forming a bloc on the board.
Moore has already endorsed Thomson, describing him as an engaged parent who understands district challenges. “He cares deeply about the success and safety of our students and understands the importance of keeping the focus on academics,” Moore said.
Thomson is challenging incumbent Trustee Michael Vargas, who was elected in 2022 and is the district’s first openly gay board member. Vargas’ tenure has included navigating debates over curriculum, school library policies, student equity policies, and community engagement, issues that have drawn public scrutiny in recent years.
Thomson said his decision to run was shaped by his attendance at school board meetings for several years, during which time he perceived a disconnect between district leadership, student needs, and parents' rights. His campaign platform emphasizes improving student achievement, increasing transparency, and strengthening communication with families.
Trustee Area 2 covers a large portion of Elk Grove along the Highway 99 corridor and includes 13 school campuses, among them Elk Grove High School.
With Thomson’s entry, the contest is expected to draw increased attention as voters weigh competing visions for the district’s direction. Thompson has launched a campaign website, https://www.kirkforegusd.com/.
