Elk Grove Police Department Military Equipment on City Council Consent Calendar Sparks Social Media Interest
Items placed on the consent calendar are considered noncontroversial and routine
An item on the consent calendar for next Wednesday's Elk Grove City Council meeting is drawing interest following a social media post.
The Instagram post (see below) from the recently formed group "De_Flock Elk Grove" urges Elk Grove residents to contact Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and her four city councilmen, alleging that the Elk Grove Police Department is not complying with Assembly Bill 481. That legislation, which became effective in 2022, "requires state and local law enforcement agencies to obtain approval from their governing bodies for the funding, acquisition, and use of defined 'military equipment'"
Their social media post says:
This Wednesday March 11 at 6p the city council has scheduled the reauthorization of AB 481 to be renewed for another year on the consent calendar meaning it’s not open for public comment. This is against the law! Elk Grove PD is also out of compliance with AB 481 as they did not hold the mandatory community meeting within 30 days of publishing their annual report.
Items placed on the consent calendar are considered noncontroversial and routine and are generally adopted en masse by a governing body. However, the public can comment on individual items, and at the request of Mayor Singh-Allen or one of her four councilmen, the items can be pulled for further deliberation.
