Elk Grove PD Receives $340K California Grant Amid Reckless Driving Concerns
Sacramento Police secured a $350,000 grant.
California is affirming its commitment to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries across the state, announcing more than $140 million in federal funding for nearly 500 local safety projects. The grants, awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), will fund initiatives focusing on enforcement, education, and innovative technology.
The funding is part of a statewide strategy developed by the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) and the California Health and Human Services Agency (CalHHS) to achieve a critical interim goal: reducing the number of people killed and seriously injured in traffic crashes by 30 percent by 2035.
“We’re reshaping traffic safety in California,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “Our investments are making our roads safer, our communities stronger, and our infrastructure more resilient.”
The OTS grants, which run through September 2026, will be distributed to law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and various city and county departments. Funding priorities include addressing impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding, and improving safety for bicyclists and pedestrians.
Locally, the Elk Grove Police Department (EGPD) has received a significant portion of the funding, accepting a grant of up to $340,000 to implement concentrated Police Traffic Services. The grant will support increased traffic enforcement strategies like sobriety checkpoints, high-visibility operations targeting distracted drivers, and enforcement focused on dangerous behaviors that put vulnerable road users at risk.
The award comes as reckless driving remains a top concern among motorists in the Sacramento region. Community complaints about street racing, sideshows, and excessive speeding in areas like Elk Grove have been consistently voiced on local social media channels and at city council meetings.
Sacramento Police secured a $350,000 grant. Also receiving grants were nearby police departments in Citrus Heights, Galt, Rancho Cordova, Roseville, and West Sacramento.
