Local youth will have the chance to step behind the spray can this summer and learn the mechanics of public art from a professional muralist.

The City of Elk Grove announced a free, hands-on workshop, "Paint the Grove: Street Art 101," designed for middle and high school students residing in the city. Led by professional muralist Cameron Moberg, the interactive session aims to introduce young people to the growing creative economy while exploring the cultural roots of street art.

The workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Old Town Plaza, located at 9615 Railroad St..

Participants will explore how murals come to life, beginning with a guided walking tour of existing "Paint the Grove" murals. The curriculum covers the history and cultural impact of street art, sketching and mural design techniques, and provides beginner-friendly, hands-on experience with spray painting.

Organizers emphasize that the program is designed to do more than just teach technical skills. It aims to spark creativity, build confidence, and highlight career pathways within public art.

The event is sponsored by a coalition of local organizations, including the Elk Grove Arts & Creative Economy Commission, the Elk Grove Fine Arts Center, and Explore Elk Grove, alongside regional partners such as Sutter Health and Republic Services.

With spaces limited, city officials expect spots to fill quickly. The deadline for students to apply to participate is Sunday, May 24.
