Democrats Do Better with In-touch Younger Candidates - Obama on Older Candidates Like Re. Doris Matsui
Former President Barack Obama suggested it is time for the Democratic Party to have younger and in-touch candidates and leadership.

A recent, lengthy interview with former President Barack Obama is attracting attention for his comments on a wide range of issues. One of his warnings is directed at long-term and older Democratic Congressional incumbent candidates like Rep. Doris Matsui (CA 7th District)

The former President noted that the Democratic Party performs better when it fields younger candidates attuned to the struggles of younger voters and to the cultural zeitgeist.

"At some point, you age out," Obama said. "You're not connected directly to the immediate struggles folks are going through."

In the race between Matsui and Democratic challenger Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang, an undercurrent has been Matsui's age - she is 81 - and the suggestion that she is not in touch with younger voters whose future is ahead of them.

Those comments were made on the Brian Tyler Cohen Podcast and are available in the video posted below. The entire interview can be viewed here.
